Joe Sikkema, DPT, PT, MASM, Cert-DN

Hi, I’m Joe Sikkema. I grew up north of the border in the Toronto, Canada area where I completed my undergraduate work in Kinesiology. I then moved to the U.S. to complete a Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine/Exercise Physiology at California State University in Fresno. I then got accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Loma Linda Medical University where I graduated with Honors in 2009.

I played D1 volleyball for York University and Brock University in Canada. I was then recruited to play for Fresno State’s team while obtaining my Master’s Degree. I have also worked as a personal trainer for 12 years and have been privileged to work with people of all ages and all athletic backgrounds. As a physical therapist, I have worked predominantly in the outpatient orthopedic setting with a variety of patients and a large variety of conditions.

My specialties include:

  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction for head/neck and jaw pain
  • Neuromuscular Re-Setting Certified in the Strain/Counterstrain technique
  • Vestibular/balance dysfunction
  • Sports Medicine
  • Level 1 USA Weight Lifting Performance Coach
  • Dry needling

My personal PT tip: Early identification of abnormal, dysfunctional, compensatory movement strategies allows for optimal levels of performance and quality of life for all ages and all activities.

“I had one of the worst knee injuries my physician had seen for a girl my age. The mental and physical rehab journey was so frustrating. I’m a teenager and I was scared I’d never be the same again. However, Joe gave me the confidence to work hard at PT. He literally extended his hands to help me walk for the first time after months on crutches. I couldn’t have taken that first step without his encouragement and belief in me.” –Ryley H.
